No Council Tax Increase this year in Calderdale

The Lib Dem led council are not passing the financial mess left locally and nationally on to the tax-payer. There will be no Council Tax increase in Calderdale this year. The mess left by the previous conservative administration in Calderdale is being rectified through careful and efficient management.

With Sure Start and libraries protected in Calderdale it has demonstrated that with careful consideration it is possible to get real value for money on a local Council level.

Lib Dems Prioritise Public Services in calderdale

Unlike other councils, there will be no closures of libraries, Sure Start Centres or swimming pools in Calderdale. The Liberal Democrat led Council have prioritised the front line services that residents wanted to keep.
Thousands of residents were asked what they wanted protected before this budget was put forward. Using ward forums, questionnaires and online responses, residents got in touch with the Council to have their say before any decisions were made. The Liberal Democrats are dedicated to asking residents before decisions are made and not after, something the previous Conservative council never did.
Due to efficient management, an extra 3 million has been found to put into front line services for disabled and vulnerable individuals. “We have cut down on council advertising and merged services to save money, keeping our priorities and focus in the right place,” said Janet Battye Leader of Calderdale Council.

Traffic Update: RESULTS

Over the last few months your local Lib Dem councillors have been getting the council’s mobile Speed Indicator Device (SiD) to Luddendenfoot Ward. As well as recording traffic speeds, SiD rewards drivers with a smile if they are travelling within the speed limit and gives a frown to those who aren’t. To the left are results of the SiD deployments:

Local Lib Dem campaigner and resident John Frederiksen said: “Some of the speeds recorded rightly concern both residents and your local Lib Dem team.”

Those with speeds above the limit will be followed up with further visits from SiD and the police. The remaining sites will be kept under surveillance.

Calderdale Councillor John Beacroft-Mitchell said: “If you have any worries about the speed of traffic on your street, give us call and we’ll get SiD to check it out.

Lib Dems get New Bus Shelter for Wainstalls

Last year residents in Wainstalls contacted Christine about getting a new bus shelter provided for the village. The existing open shelter left those waiting for their buses exposed to the wind and rain.

A local company was willing to allow extra land to be used for the benefit of the community. With the help from fellow Lib Dem councillor, Robert Pearson (who represents Calderdale MBC at West Yorkshire Passenger Transport/Metro) a new, more protective shelter was agreed and installed before Christmas.

Christine said: “I was determined to get a result for Wainstalls. It shows that with persistence we can make large organisations like Metro listen to communities, and get things done.”

LIBRARIES HALTED BY THE LIB DEMS

After a spate of Conservative closures of Calderdale libraries Lib Dems have decided there will be no more library closures.

Services Improve For Most Vulnerable Across Calderdale

The Care Quality Commission gave the Lib Dem led Calderdale Council a shining review for their support and treatment of the elderly.

It clearly stated that the Elderly in Calderdale are safeguarded from abuse, neglect and self-harm.

According to the independent body services are set to improve in coming years thanks to the Lib Dems clear vision of development.

Who Runs Our Buses?

If asked who runs our bus service most people would say METRO, but in fact several independent companies do. They can change or withdraw services at two months notice, and they each use their own ticketing system. They are answerable to shareholders.

In recent years fares have generally risen above inflation, services have been cut, and the number of fare paying passengers has fallen.

THIS COULD CHANGE

Metro are already looking at alternatives, and want to know what you think. They could take control of bus routes, introduce integrated ticketing throughout the region, improve integration with Trains, and much more. This option would be through a QBC (Quality Bus Contract, similar to London Transport). It would also mean taking on the risks involved in operating these services, and is just one option being considered.

BUDGET PROPOSALS FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS

“Supporting local people in hard times”

Recognising the hardship many people will be facing in the coming year, the aims of the Liberal Democrat Opposition group on Calderdale Council are to protect existing council services, to provide more of those services that will minimise the effects of the economic downturn, while helping people in general by keeping the Council tax rise down to a minimum.

Our proposals include savings of £5m over the next 3 years, even with the proposed new services the rise in Council tax would only be just over 1% in 2009libdem-budget-proposals

Consultation with the public: Liberal Democrats are firm believers in the importance of talking with people, listening and responding to their views.

Responses need to be returned to Cllr Janet Battye, group leader, by Friday 13^th February so that they can be considered before the final proposals are prepared to go to Calderdale’s Budget Council meeting on February 23^rd.
