Residents of Sowood and Outlane are backing a call for the bus service linking their communities to West Vale to be reinstated. A petition calling for improvements to the bus service has been signed by around 1,000 people and will be presented to Calderdale Council at its meeting on Wednesday (19 July).
Cllr Paul Bellenger (Liberal Democrat, Greetland and Stainland), one of the organisers of the petition told us: “a couple of years ago the 539 service that linked Sowood to West Vale was altered so that it now only goes as far as Bowling Green. This has made it more difficult for residents of Sowood to access the doctor’s surgery and shops in West Vale.”
“Around 900 people live in and around Sowood and well over one hundred of these people are over 65 and so in an age group that is more dependent on public transport. It is also important that older people, especially in more rural areas, can get out and about and meet other people. Bus services can provide a vital lifeline that helps people who struggle to get out into the community.”
“Reinstating the service from Sowood to West Vale – even if only on a few days a week – would be a great help to local residents as well as providing a welcome economic boost for the shops in West Vale.”
“I hope that the Council will be able to use its influence, along with the strength of feeling expressed by local people, to bring about improvements in this bus service” says Cllr Bellenger.
